User TidiToad posted a short clip to the Minecraft Subreddit a few days ago which shows them engaging in a light bit of fishing along with another player. During the usually tranquil activity, they are suddenly given a bit of a shock as an Elder Guardian comes lunging out from the small body of water to attack them. According to a report from PCGamesN, this is based off an April Fool’s snapshot update that goes back to 2020, meaning that this rare Easter egg has seemingly gone unnoticed for two years.

While fishing in Minecraft is usually a peaceful affair, the sight of the vicious Guardian must have given the players a bit of a fright as they frantically move in to defend themselves. It seems as though this was a rare occurrence in which attempting to catch some fish can yield this antagonistic beast. While the post title on Reddit says that this was from snapshot 20w13infinite, it’s more than likely that this was in the 20w14infinite build instead. In any case, it goes to show that no matter how long the game has been out, there are still opportunities to find new things.
As for the mob itself, Guardians in Minecraft are hostile creatures which give off a powerful laser beam. They were added to the game for the 13w25a patch after being announced in the summer of 2014. A number of people in the comments have noted how unlikely it must have been to be able to discover an Elder Guardian while out fishing.
After more than a decade, there are still many secrets that exist in Minecraft, some of which are still being found by players to this day. With the addition of the two-year-old April Fool’s update, it shows that no matter how many millions of fans log in to play the game each month, fans will always be surprised by what’s there. It begs the question of what else has Mojang left behind that has yet to be found.
Minecraft is available now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
