Two thousand years later and the Heavenly Father is still on about his Child of God, except this time around, he is causing havoc at the Demon King Academy (in the guise of the Blaze Death King, Erdomaid DittiJohn.) Summoning the subordinates of the Four Evil Royals, NousGalia sets several battles in motion for Anos and his crew to endure.

“The Demon King’s Duel of Intellect”
While a bloodsoaked Melheis (also spelled Meleheyth) hovers in the corner, frozen in time one second after death, Anos Voldigoad and Ziek Ozma set up the terms of their duel and, in order to level out the playing field somewhat, this will be a battle of the wits. Anos will receive eighteen opportunities to guess which of his subordinates is the Child of God (which the confident Demon King widdles down to just nine possible predictions) and while Ziek promises to give truthful answers, he reserves the right to tell a singular lie. If Anos forfeits, his magic will be sealed for five seconds (whereas Melheis only has two seconds left on his resurrection clock.)
Anos’s first question involves the most likely suspects: the Necron sisters, Misa and Zeshia, which according to Ziek, is a good place to start. He goes on to query each one in turn and is given the go-ahead to suspect Misa, although it is uncertain where the lie hides; meanwhile, Anos seems determined to keep Zeshia in the running. Ziek confirms that the Child of God has Demon Eyes of Destruction but is not a Demon-Spirit hybrid, causing Anos’ suspicions to run rampant and eliminate all the aforementioned girls from the list of culprits.

Powerless to remove any contradictory elements from the equation, Anos calls Ziek out for his trickery, as it proves impossible to ascertain and remove the false answer. As it turns out, Ziek has been working from a fake implanted memory to dish out the “facts,” and Anos was doomed for failure from the get-go. Refusing to continue with these menial mind games, Anos forfeits the match and surprisingly sacrifices Melheis in the process, while Ziek gets ready to inflict some damage. However, this is the omnipotent Demon King, who assumed from the beginning that Melheis was the original target, so he made a clone of the Demon Elder and then lured Ziek into a false sense of security. Realizing he has been duped, the Blaze Death King’s minion commits suicide; however, Anos resurrects him as a talkative and cooperative owl instead.
“Borne of Great Spirit”
Misa Ilioroagu’s Source holds tremendous value because, according to Gerad Azrema, she has the Great Spirit Leno’s blood in her veins (which is news to the hybrid girl.) Wielding one-half of the Looting Sword Gilionojes and The Magic Shield Gennias, Gerad dominates the greatest swordsman in existence while Lay Glanzudlii bares the brunt of the painful, Source destroying curse.

Luckily for Lay, he has several Sources to work with and can therefore afford to sacrifice a few; a game-changing detail that Kaihilam Jiste’s henchman clearly overlooked. Finding himself on the losing end of this duel, Gerad also adds his name to the suicide list (although his Source seems to have survived the ordeal.)
“Born of A God, After All”
While the Necron sisters and Rinka Theornes debate whether the Gods had a hand in their existence (well, Misha’s, anyway), tempers begin to flair, and the magical combat quickly ensues. Sasha engulfs her foe in a fiery inferno and whips out her Demon Eyes of Destruction; however, her efforts fall flat against the Free Sword Garmest’s invisible, transformative force, which gets well acquainted with Sasha’s innards.

Misha pops out of nowhere with some icy chains but gets brutally stabbed as well; however, she is left with enough fight to (almost instantaneously) create the Divine Delsegard. Displaying such jaw-dropping magic prompts the King of the Netherworld’s adjutant to question if Misha is a Child of God who has been “awakened,” opening up a can of worms before being consumed by Ice Crystals and transformed into a harmless snowflake.
Born of Godly Magic
Zabro Gaze sends out some serious necromantic mad scientist vibes as he takes on Eleonore and Zeshia, setting the sinister tone with his zombified army (which has some familiar faces in its ranks.) However, the Holy Mother quickly nullifies Gore Grum’s effects, freeing the Sources from their rotting confines, while Zabro begins ranting about the Gods. The Scarlet Monument King’s Lieutenant claims that a Divine Intervention was needed to create Eleonore’s vessel, who then subsequently produced Zeshia, a being that should “coincidentally” be powerful enough to “carry the power of the Gods.”

Reanimating the “Gools” with his modified Igrams spells, Zabro overwhelms the girls with castle-dwelling corpses, and the pair flee in horror (rather than cut down their former friends.) The sadist tracks Eleonore and her daughter down and activates Jino Gleanus to sap their magical power away; however, Eleonore summons enough energy to cast Asc and generates some unique magic of her own. Fueled by the power within her own Source, the all-new spell called Eleonore eloquently negates the effects of Gore Grum and brings the assailant to his knees.
The Importance of Pacing
Although there is still a great deal of information to absorb in one sitting, “The Demon King’s Duel of Intellect” has much better pacing than Season 2’s debut, which was a crash course in Misfit mythology, and then some! Those not privy to Light Novel spoilers are kept on their toes as the mystery surrounding the Child of God’s identity intensifies, with each candidate making a fair claim to the foreboding title.
The seamless flow between battles adds to the overall suspense of the showdowns (even though fans are well aware that Anos will likely swoop in to save the day!) Misha’s awakening is an intriguing development, particularly considering that she may be stronger than her sister now, which Sasha’s frail ego may not be able to deal with. The drawing standard seems to have deteriorated ever so slightly in episode 2; however, Studio Silver Link hit the mark where it matters by creating breathtaking battles.
