Rebecca Seay, 83, was reported as missing in mid-February and found dead on March 3, although Memphis police did not share further information about her death at the time.

Gregory Tanner, 59, the partner of Seay’s late child, was charged on Monday on suspicion of stealing money from Seay, abusing her corpse, property theft, identity theft, and forgery, according to The Commercial Appeal.

Tanner had been Seay’s caregiver, and while her cause of death is unclear, he has not been charged in connection with it.

According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), some 600,000 individuals go missing in the U.S. every year.

NamUs added that an estimated 4,400 unidentified bodies are recovered each year in the U.S.

Documents obtained by The Commercial Appeal state that Seay’s body was found wrapped in sheets and buried two feet under the garden of Tanner’s rental home on North Montgomery Street in Memphis.

Seay was found next to the ashes of her child that Tanner had collected in the fall of 2020, according to documents.

Department of Human Services care workers last saw Seay, who suffered from dementia, on January 22, and she was released from the hospital into Tanner’s care. The documents stated the care workers had not been able to contact Seay following her release.

A missing-person alert was posted for Seay by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on March 2, the day before she was found dead.

That same day, representatives from Seay’s bank told investigators they believed there was suspicious activity on her account, according to documents.

Officers later found nearly $25,000 in charges between January 2021 and March 2022 to gambling accounts in Tanner’s name.

The documents also stated Tanner forged Seay’s signature on $80,000 of checks into his own bank accounts, and police said the money was not used to fund Seay’s medical care. Her estate lost $105,400 in total, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Commercial Appeal.

Tanner has since been booked into jail, and his bond was set at $150,000. He is next due in court later today.

Newsweek has contacted the Memphis Police Department for comment.

On October 4, the skeletal remains of Peter Meyers, 68, were found by a hiker in a remote part of Wharton State Forest, according to the Cherry Hill Police Department.

Police later confirmed the remains were those of Meyers, who was first reported as missing over the summer.

A cause of death has not yet been determined, and the investigation is ongoing, according to police.
