The eighth Mission: Impossible film, as the title suggests, is the second chapter of a two-part finale for the franchise. Plot details for both Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 remain under wraps, but fans can expect to see IMF agent Ethan Hunt and his team embark on another adventure to thwart a global disaster that takes them across the globe.

Deadline reports that McCallany will join Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part Two as Secretary of Defense Bernstein. Aside from that, not much else was revealed about McCallany’s role, including how substantial it may or may not be. McCallany joins a cast that includes Hayley Atwell, Shea Whigham, and Pom Klementieff, with the latter three set to be introduced to the Mission: Impossible franchise in Dead Reckoning Part One. In addition to his acclaimed performance as FBI Special Agent Bill Tench in Mindhunter, McCallany is also known for starring in AMC’s legal drama 61st Street and Guillermo del Toro’s Best Picture-nominated film Nightmare Alley.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two will see Christopher McQuarrie returning to the director’s chair after previously directing Part One, Fallout, and Rogue Nation for the franchise. The road to getting the Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning films into theaters has been a long one. The first chapter was among the first Hollywood productions to be shut down when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and even after filming was allowed to continue, the project has to pause for a week after crew members tested positive for the virus. Over the course of the past two years, the global health crisis led to multiple release date delays for the Mission: Impossible sequels.

News of McCallany’s casting will likely be welcomed by fans of his work, particularly those who enjoyed his performance in Mindhunter. The series, which follows the beginnings of the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit and criminal profiling, was once expected to release the third season on Netflix until those plans were put on indefinite hold because Fincher wanted to pursue new projects. So, fans who have been hoping for Mindhunter season 3 may find some comfort in knowing McCallany will join another popular project soon.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two is scheduled to release in theaters on June 28, 2024.
