The 43-year-old coach finished the Boston Marathon on Monday despite never having run an organized race of any distance. Mullen covered the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Boylston Street in 4 hours, 28 minutes, 35 seconds, an average of 10:14 per mile.

Mullen got a sponsor’s exemption from adidas to run on behalf of the Mullen Family 36 Foundation, which supports children’s charities in Mississippi. Though he said heading into the race that he has never run so much as a 5K race, he has been training for Boston for months.

It took him more than twice as long as the elite men’s runners to finish, but Mullen had reason to hold his head high Monday.
