She told the station that she and her husband decided that the best way to handle the situation was to have a “good sense of humor” about it.
A day later the thief returned and took the package. “She got the special surprise from my daughter,” the mother told KSDK, adding that it “felt good to feel like we got some sort of justice” and hoped it would “make people think twice before they steal.”
Hazelwood Police arrested the suspected thief, a 42-year-old woman from Hazelwood, on Sunday. A spokesman for the department told KSDK that the family’s response was “creative,” but they don’t encourage the transfer of bodily fluids.
In a post on Facebook, the police department said it had received a number of reports of package thefts in the 200 block of Alma Drive. Police said a resident was able to provide them with surveillance footage of the suspect that was “vital for a description of the culprit.”
On Sunday, officers received information about a person who matched the description from previous thefts in the area. They responded to the scene and apprehended the suspect and took her into custody for the thefts and existing felony warrants.
“A big thanks to the residents for providing vital information which was significant for the outcome of this case,” Hazelwood Police said in the news release. Newsweek has contacted the Hazelwood Police Department for further comment.
Authorities urge residents to avoid having their parcels stolen by following a number of tips, such as trying to schedule deliveries for when they are home or having them delivered to workplaces.
