Miyamoto admits to Japanese magazine Famitsu that Nintendo doesn’t stray too far from their traditional gameplay mechanics and core ideology in video game development. This is evident in the new Super Mario title for the Wii U, which was shown during E3 and is set to release later this year.

On the other side of that coin however, is Nintendo’s drive to create new experiences from its existing franchises. Featuring Princess Peach as a playable character means she is not simply a damsel in distress or a trophy to be acquired. She’s every bit a part of the action now, for the first time since Super Mario Bros. 2 on the NES.

The new character double-whammy that Nintendo intends to provide with Super Mario 3D World is a logical re-inclusion to the popular franchise, and should help sell the new title for Wii U owners and prospective buyers alike.

Besides the typical Marios and Zeldas that fans are used to seeing arrive on new Nintendo systems, Miyamoto also teased the arrival of a brand new franchise coming in 2014. Very little has been said already, but expectations are undoubtedly high for the new IP.

Nintendo has its hands full for the next few years, but what could this new franchise be, and what genres will it encompass? All bets are off at this point, but anything worthy of Nintendo’s seal of approval should also appeal to the company’s many fans. What do you think Miyamoto is up to, Ranters?
